The goal of this program is to enhance each student’s math and reading skills while also showing them how to embrace their unique individuality.

Who Am I ?

My life is very different than I thought it would be. I was injured during an ice hockey game my senior year of high school and broke my neck.  From that point on I had to figure out how to live my life in a wheelchair.   I went to college with no idea what I could actually do for a living.  I decided to try teaching – one of the best decisions of my life – and recently retired after teaching high school mathematics for 22 years.

As a teacher, if I wanted my students to understand math, I first had to help them understand me. Generally, when people understand that I am comfortable with myself, they become comfortable as well. I need assistance even with the simplest of tasks, yet my physical limitations have provided me with a unique opportunity as an educator. Through helping me, my students become active participants in how we function each school day. Without realizing it, they become active participants in their own education. Just as importantly, in me they witness somebody who is different and still functioning happily in the world.

The greatest lesson that I could teach any of my students is that it's okay to be different, because you control your own happiness. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to see many sides of many children. The commonality is that they all want to be successful and happy. Many don’t know how to get there or struggle with focusing on learning. School becomes the second, third or fourth area of importance in their life. Like me, many are unsure where they fit in the world.

As much as was taken from me by the accident, I have realized I was given much more in return. Though I have almost no control of my body, I do control my thoughts and, more importantly, my heart. I have been blessed to have positive impact on many students, since participating in my life has allowed them to question their mindsets and look into their hearts to find their path to happiness.

I am living through the unimaginable and use my unique perspective to help children understand there is always a path through adversity.  Life will always provide opportunities, and it is our choice to find the strength to make the most of those opportunities.
